Enticement of a Child and Police Stings in Denver, Colorado

Posted by Kyle B. Sawyer | Dec 31, 2018 | 0 Comments

Police stings are often reported in the news – police officers and sheriff deputies can't wait to brag about tricking people into attempting to commit crimes like Enticement of a Child and Internet Luring of a Child. They believe that they are arresting someone who would have committed the crime against an actual child. They do not consider the possibility that the man or woman would not have attempted to commit the crime, had the officer not provided them with an opportunity. Law enforcement in Denver must be careful what they say during the communications, or risk the defendant using Entrapment as a viable defense.

Internet Luring of a Child in Larimer County

Larimer County Police love to pretend that they are a child under 15 years of age, and enter chat rooms in order to start communicating with an adult like you. After communication has been established, if you describe explicit sexual conduct with them and you invite or persuade the “child” to meet for any purpose, you can be charged with Internet Luring of a Child. You will still be charged with this class 4 or class 5 felony even if the meeting never took place.

Colorado Man Caught in Police Sting Faces Sex Crime Charges

This very thing happened recently when a Colorado man traveled to New Mexico in an attempt to have sex with who he thought was a 14 year-old girl. He had been sending sexual messages to her, sent lewd images of himself, and eventually arranged a meeting at a park in order to had sexual intercourse. It must have been a gut-wrenching surprise when he discovered that he'd actually been communicating with a deputy from San Juan County Sheriff's Office, when detectives at the park arrested him. He is charged with multiple counts of child solicitation in New Mexico, but if the crime were to have occurred in a Colorado city such as Aurora or Brighton, he could be charged with Internet Luring of a Child or Soliciting for Child Prostitution, depending on whether or not the man offered to pay her for sex.
