Colorado Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB) “No Known Cure” Model

The “No Known Cure” model is what all law enforcement officials, district attorneys, and judges operate under in Denver, Larimer, and Weld County. The Sex Offender Management Board of Colorado (SOMB) has released a statement considering their stance on the “No Known Cure” platform. It does not matter if you have been charged with the sex crime of Rape or Sexual Assault (CRS 18-3-402), Unlawful Sexual Contact (CRS 18-3-404) or Indecent Exposure (CRS 18-7-302). District attorneys in Jefferson, Arapahoe, Adams, or Douglas County see a convicted sex offender as a “ticking time bomb” who is likely to re-offend at any moment.

How Does the “No Known Cure” Model Affect Treatment?

“No Known Cure” regarding a sex offender means supervisors have no way of guaranteeing the offender will not go and offend the law again after they are released into the community. They do not take into consideration unique details that may have been exclusive to a particular case. They assume anyone convicted of or who pled guilty to a misdemeanor or felony sexual offense will offend again. They hope, instead, positive changes may be made because of intense therapy, supervision, or “ongoing long-term management and containment of adult sex offenders.” Those words are death to any freedom or liberty after being convicted or pleading guilty to a sex crime. After treatment is successfully finished, the government still does not believe a person can go on to live a life where they do not re-offend, so they require lifetime sex offender registration.
