Shop Around for a Good Lawyer
Don't hire the first person you call. If you don't speak with multiple lawyers, you don't have a way of comparison. For example, let's say you are charged with a sex offense such as Sexual Assault – C.R.S. 18-3-402 in Adams County. If you meet with just one lawyer, you won't know if the promises or suggestions he makes are realistic. You won't know if the quoted fee is fair unless you can compare it with other attorneys. Set up meetings with three different lawyers, and then picture which one you are most comfortable representing you in court in front of a judge or jury.
Be Realistic About Promises
Be realistic about the seriousness of your charges. If a lawyer promises she will get you off of your charges without interviewing any witnesses or seeing any police reports, understand they are lying to you. They are making promises they can't possibly keep in order for you to hire them. Don't be so desperate to hear good news that you accept a lie. When you meet with an attorney to discuss your case, be realistic about your charges and ask probing question about how they will get your charges dismissed. Delve deep into their legal knowledge and make sure they can explain how they will work on your case. Leave the meeting and scrutinize their answers – don't hire without looking realistically at their promises.
Bring a Friend When Looking for the Best Criminal Defense Attorney
We often advise potential clients to bring a trusted friend or advisor to their initial consultation with a lawyer at our firm. It is best if your friend isn't involved in your case and can offer an unbiased, unemotional opinion about the meeting.
Don't Go With the Cheapest Lawyer
Cheap isn't better. If you were looking for a heart surgeon, would you shop around for the cheapest one? Often, lawyers in Larimer, Kiowa and Douglas County charge low rates in order to get business out of desperation. You don't want to place your future in the hands of a desperate criminal defense attorney. Also, attorneys who offer cheap rates often practice in many different areas of law and aren't experts in criminal law.
Don't Hire a Part-Time Criminal Defense Attorney
When you are looking for the best criminal lawyer for your sex crimes case, be sure to find a lawyer who practices criminal law solely. Don't hire a criminal defense attorney who works criminal cases part time along with divorce, personal injury and bankruptcy. They are unable to be excellent lawyers in each area, but will only be adequate. You don't want to put your future and freedom in the hands of an “adequate” lawyer.
