A high-school teacher in Larimer County has been charged with Sexual Exploitation of a Child – CRS 18-6-403 for allegedly raising a 16-year-old student's grades in exchange for nude photos of the girl. The teacher started a Facebook conversation with the girl that quickly grew sexual. The girl sent him six nude pictures of herself, and he sent a few of himself to her. Immediately following these actions, the girl's grades improved drastically.
What is Sexual Exploitation of a Child in Denver?
Sexual Exploitation of a Child occurs when a person:
- Is in possession of pornography or other sexually explicit materials that depict children under the age of eighteen.
- Prepares pornography or other sexually explicit materials that include children under the age of eighteen, or entices them to participate.
- Distributes and attempts to sell pornography or other sexually explicit materials that include children under the age of eighteen.
The Sexual Culture of Today: Crimes More Easily Committed
The culture of the world today is highly sexual. Teenagers are having sex earlier and earlier, and the age difference between a 16 year-old and an 18 year-old is not always noticeable. Colorado has very harsh penalties for sex offenders – it is wise to consider this fact when entering any sort of sexual relationship with someone who may be a minor. Teenagers who send nude images to each other can also face harsh consequences. Sexting has dangerous consequences: A photo sent to a boyfriend could lead to his arrest for sexual exploitation in Adams or Jefferson County.
The Consequences of Being Charged with Sexual Exploitation of a Child:
If you are convicted of Sexual Exploitation of a Child in Denver, Arapahoe, or Douglas County, you could be imprisoned in the Colorado Department of Corrections, and you will undergo sex offender treatment overseen by the Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB). SOMB has a “no cure” policy for sex offenders, so you will be treated as an offender for life. One moment of weakness or not realizing that a young girl isn't really eighteen can ruin your life. The Larimer County teacher is not a U.S. Citizen, so he is being deported to the United Kingdom – losing your home is a harsh consequence (read more about his case on the Denver Channel 7 News). It is vital to your future freedom that you contact an experienced criminal lawyer immediately.
