Criminal charges can pile up quickly in Denver, Arapahoe, and Jefferson County. When the charges are sex offenses, the consequences are serious. If you have been contacted by the police regarding a sex offense charge, don't hesitate to contact one of our aggressive criminal defense attorneys to be your advocate in court. Let's look at how quickly charges can pile up.

Teacher Facing Multiple Charges for Possession of Illegal Images

According to an article I recently read, a high school teacher was charged with two counts of the Colorado equivalent of Sexual Exploitation of a Child – C.R.S. 18-6-403. This sex offense is charged in Adams, Douglas, and El Paso County when a person is found to be in possession of sexual images or other media which include children under the age of 18 (child pornography). The reason the high school teacher is facing two counts, is because the police and investigators found images on both his computer at school, and in his home. Because the images were stored in two different locations, he is facing two counts.

Charged with Sexual Exploitation: Restrictions Put in Place

As I read the article about the high school teacher, I was struck by the many restrictions put into place after he was charged. The teacher isn't allowed to leave the state, cannot have contact with minors without supervision (which is difficult, because he is a teacher), and isn't allowed to have a computer. This is all put into place before he even goes to trial. What happened to “innocent until proven guilty?”

Why You Need a Lawyer for Sexual Exploitation Charges

The police and District Attorney will treat you as if you are guilty. You need your own advocate in the court!

If you've been charged with Sexual Exploitation of a Child in Boulder, Pitkin, or Grand County, don't hesitate to contact one of the knowledgeable criminal defense lawyers at the O'Malley Law Office. When it comes to sex crimes (especially those involving children), the government in Colorado is extremely harsh and unyielding. Often, people are treated as if they are guilty before they have gone to trial. If you've been arrested for possessing illegal images of children, the police will treat you as if you are guilty. The District Attorney will treat you as if you are guilty. That's why you need a criminal defense lawyer fighting on your behalf. Maybe you didn't know the images were on your computer – you bought it on Craigslist, or it was a computer a friend or family member borrowed. Or, maybe you thought you were downloading something else, and didn't know the illegal images were on your computer. Whatever the situation, you need a lawyer to investigate your side of the story and gather evidence to prove your innocence to the court. We have close relationships with forensic computer science experts who can pull apart the government's case against you. Don't stand alone in front of a judge or jury – work with one of our hardworking criminal defense attorneys who will fight to win.
